Ensuring Transparency in Journalism: Konde’s Journey with JTI

When we spoke with Nabila Wahuy, Executive Manager at Konde, she shared the story of a media outlet driven by purpose. Konde is more than just an independent platform in Indonesia—it’s a voice for women and marginalized communities. Through investigative reports, opinion pieces, and multimedia content across their website and social media channels, they bring crucial but often overlooked stories to light. Beyond reporting, Konde actively collaborates with organizations advocating for domestic workers’ rights and disability inclusion issues, ensuring their journalism drives real impact.

“JTI provided us with a structured framework that reassures the public of our independence and integrity. It’s not just about certification; it’s about building trust in our work.”– Nabila Wahuy, Executive Manager of Konde.

How did you first hear about JTI?

What motivated you to pursue JTI certification, and what benefits have you seen from it?

For us, transparency is essential. The JTI certification provided an objective way to demonstrate our editorial independence and professional standards. By publishing our transparency report, we reassured our audience that we are free from financial or political influence. The impact was immediate—after making the report public, several larger media organizations and industry stakeholders reached out, asking about our experience and how they could also obtain certification. This has helped us build credibility and opened up new opportunities for collaboration.

How was your experience with the JTI certification process?

Completing the transparency report was a rigorous process that took us a few months. It required a thorough internal review of our operations, but it was worth it. The final report is now featured on our website, making our commitment to transparency visible to the public.

How has communication with the JTI team been throughout this process?

The JTI team has been incredibly supportive and responsive. They provided detailed explanations whenever we had questions and guided us through each step of the process. Even when minor issues arose, they were quick to assist—sometimes even reaching out via WhatsApp to ensure we had everything we needed. Their support has made a significant difference in our experience.

What’s next for Konde, and how do you see JTI certification evolving in the future?

We believe JTI certification is an essential tool for independent media like ours. It strengthens our credibility and sets a higher standard for transparency in journalism. Moving forward, we hope more media outlets adopt the JTI framework, creating a stronger, more accountable media ecosystem.
